What it is: Johnnie's Dog House in Wayne, hot dogs to eat in or take out.

What we like about it: July is National Hot Dog Month, honest, and what better place to celebrate than Johnnie's? It serves more than 60 hot dog options. First, you can get three types: beef, veggie and turkey; they're a bit longer (7 inches) and wider than the supermarket variety. Next, they come with any of 21 topping combinations of sauces, cheeses, chili, onions and jalapeo peppers.

Daring customers might want to try Mad Dog Johnnie, with jalapeos, chopped onions, and a blend of Johnnie's secret sauces.

The menu also includes sausages, fish and chips, a shrimp basket, fries and onion rings. Wash your dog down with milkshakes, ice cream sundaes or floats, or Hank's sodas.

Johnnie's is cozy, but not cramped, with a few tables, counters with stools, and three outside benches. The decor, lots of red leatherette, evokes the early '50s.

Don't miss: Try the Bachelor, a dog with a simple but tangy tomato and onion sauce, then explore the more exotic varieties.

What it costs: Dog prices start at $1.89 for a Plain Ol' Dog and peak at $3.35 for the Texas Tommy.
